History

The area of ancient Magnesia, today's Volos, is one of the first places to be inhabited in Greece. In the mycenaean period Iolcos (a city) is established there with important economic and spiritual significance. During the period of the Byzantine Empire the city continued to flourish and to grow. In the 14th century appears for the first time the name Volos. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the city of Volos and Pelion were under close siege, while the present-day city of Volos began to be built outside of the old castle a little after 1830. In 1881 Volos was annexed to the Greek state, only to fall back in the hands of the Turks in 1897, after the unfortunate Greco-Turkish war. In 1883 by royal decree Volos became part of the Greek state and experienced a great development due to its favorable geographical position.
